Liam Gallagher, born William John Paul Gallagher on September 21, 1972, in Manchester, England, stands as one of the most iconic figures in British rock music.

As the lead vocalist and co-founder of the legendary band Oasis, he became a symbol of the 1990s Britpop explosion.

Raised in a working-class Irish immigrant family in Manchester’s Burnage suburb, Gallagher’s early life was marked by modest beginnings and familial upheaval, which would later fuel the gritty authenticity of his lyrics and performances.

Beyond Oasis, he has carved out a successful solo career, releasing multiple chart-topping albums and collaborating with notable artists.

    Siblings

Liam’s eldest brother, Paul Gallagher, born in 1965, has largely stayed out of the spotlight, working as a music promoter and author who penned a memoir about the Gallagher family’s early years in Manchester.

Paul has occasionally collaborated with his siblings on projects but maintains a lower profile compared to the band’s fame.

The middle brother, Noel Gallagher, born in 1967, is the most renowned sibling and Oasis’s primary songwriter and lead guitarist; the intense rivalry between Liam and Noel defined much of the band’s dynamic, culminating in Noel’s departure in 2009 that led to Oasis’s breakup.

    Career

Gallagher’s career skyrocketed in the early 1990s when he joined the fledgling band The Rain as its vocalist in 1991, renaming it Oasis after his brother Noel signed on as guitarist and chief songwriter.

The band’s debut album, Definitely Maybe in 1994, captured the raw energy of Britpop and became the fastest-selling debut in UK history, propelling Oasis to global stardom with hits like “Supersonic” and “Live Forever.”

Their follow-up, (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? in 1995, solidified their legacy, featuring anthems such as “Wonderwall” and “Don’t Look Back in Anger” that topped charts worldwide and sold over 22 million copies.

Oasis’s subsequent releases, including the record-breaking Be Here Now in 1997 — which remains the UK’s fastest-selling album ever — and later works like Standing on the Shoulder of Giants (2000), Heathen Chemistry (2002), Don’t Believe the Truth (2005), and Dig Out Your Soul (2008), all reached number one in the UK, while massive tours drew millions of fans across Europe, North America, and South America.

After Oasis’s acrimonious split in 2009, Gallagher quickly formed Beady Eye with ex-bandmates Gem Archer, Andy Bell, and Chris Sharrock, releasing Different Gear, Still Speeding in 2011 and BE in 2013 before the group disbanded in 2014.

Undeterred, he launched his solo career in 2017 with As You Were, a platinum-certified album that debuted at number one on the UK charts and marked a triumphant return with tracks like “Wall of Glass.”

This was followed by Why Me? Why Not. in 2019, which also topped the UK charts and became the year’s fastest-selling vinyl release, and C’mon You Know in 2022, his fourth consecutive solo number one.

In 2024, Gallagher ventured into new territory with the collaborative album Liam Gallagher & John Squire, blending his vocal prowess with The Stone Roses guitarist John Squire’s riffs.

That same year, he and Noel announced Oasis’s reunion for a massive 2025 world tour, kicking off in July in Cardiff, Wales.

    Accolades

In 2010, Q magazine crowned him the greatest frontman of all time, a testament to his electrifying live performances that have captivated audiences for decades.

Oasis dominated the NME Awards from 1996 to 2003, securing honors for Best Act, Best Live Band, and Band of the Year, while their 2016 documentary Oasis: Supersonic won Best Music Film at the International Documentary Association Awards in 2017.

On the solo front, Gallagher received the Q Award for Best Live Act in 2017 and was named GQ’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Star of the Year that same year.

He clinched the MTV Europe Music Award for Rock Icon in 2019 and followed with Best Rock wins at the 2024 MTV EMAs for his solo work.

Nominations have poured in, including Brit Award nods for British Male Solo Artist in 2018 and Scottish Music Awards for Best UK Artist in 2019.
