Detectives are investigating the fatal shooting of a Kenyan man who was found dead after he had been shot at the main Kenya-Somalia border in Mandera.

The body of Abdifatah Mohamed Maalim, 31 was found lying in a trench with a gunshot wound in the back.

Blood was oozing from his mouth and ears when the body was found on January 15, police said.

Police said preliminary indications show the man was shot by members of the Somalia National Army also deployed in the area.

It is not clear what prompted the shooting. The incident caused tension in the area as authorities assured the locals they will investigate it for action.

An autopsy on the body revealed he died out of loss of blood caused by the shooting.

The body was released to his relatives for burial, pending investigations.

There has been rising tension in the area between Kenyan security officials and the Somalia National Army. The SNA is also facing hostilities from gangs in the Bullahawa area which is neighbouring Mandera Town.

On Wednesday, two members of the National Police Reserve were killed by an Improvised Explosive Device that had been set by the SNA. Two others were injured in the incident. Police said they recovered and detonated another explosive in the area.

The area has been experiencing instability from infighting between the Somalia security agencies and al Shabaab terror group.

Somalia has not had an effective central government since the 1991 overthrow of President Siad Barre’s military regime, which ushered in more than two decades of anarchy and conflict in a country deeply divided along clan lines.

Kenya launched Operation Linda Nchi on October 14, 2011, after gunmen seized tourists at the Coast, which the Government saw as a threat to the country’s sovereignty, as it targeted the nation’s economic lifeline, which is tourism.
