Steven Tyler is one of rock music’s most iconic and enduring frontmen.

Born Steven Victor Tallarico on March 26, 1948, in New York, he rose to fame as the lead singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist of the legendary band Aerosmith.

Known for his distinctive raspy voice, high-pitched screams, flamboyant stage presence, and long scarves, Tyler has become a symbol of hard rock excess and longevity.

His mixed heritage includes Italian and German roots from his father, Victor Tallarico, a classical pianist and music teacher, and Polish, English, and African-American ancestry from his mother, Susan Ray Blancha, a secretary.

Steven has one older sister named Lynda Tallarico.

However, information about her remains relatively private compared to his more public family life.

    Career

Tyler’s career spans over five decades, primarily through Aerosmith, which he co-founded in Boston in the early 1970s with guitarist Joe Perry and other members.

The band’s self-titled debut arrived in 1973, but breakthrough success came with albums like Toys in the Attic (1975) and Rocks (1976), delivering timeless hits such as “Dream On,” “Sweet Emotion,” and “Walk This Way.”

Despite struggles with substance abuse and lineup changes in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Aerosmith staged a remarkable comeback starting with Permanent Vacation (1987), followed by multi-platinum successes like Pump (1989), Get a Grip (1993), and Nine Lives (1997).

These eras produced major singles including “Janie’s Got a Gun,” “Livin’ on the Edge,” “Crazy,” and “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing,” the latter from the Armageddon soundtrack featuring his daughter Liv Tyler.

Tyler’s collaborations, such as the groundbreaking 1986 Run-D.M.C. cover of “Walk This Way,” bridged rock and hip-hop.

Beyond Aerosmith, he pursued solo work, including the 2020 album Out on a Limb, and served as a judge on American Idol.

His dynamic performances and songwriting continue to define classic rock.

    Accolades

Tyler was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Aerosmith in 2001.

Rolling Stone ranked him among the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time.

He and Joe Perry received the ASCAP Founders Award and induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2013.

Aerosmith earned four Grammy Awards, including for “Janie’s Got a Gun,” “Livin’ on the Edge,” and “Crazy,” alongside numerous American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, and other honors recognizing the band’s sales of over 150 million albums worldwide and lasting cultural impact.
