Eugenie “Genie” Bouchard is a Canadian former professional tennis player, born on February 25, 1994, in Montreal, Quebec.
The daughter of investment banker Michel Bouchard and Julie Leclair, she grew up in the Westmount neighbourhood of Montreal and later trained extensively in Florida after moving there at age 12 with her mother.
Bouchard rose to international prominence in the mid-2010s as one of the most successful Canadian tennis players of her generation.
She reached a career-high singles ranking of world No. 5 in October 2014, becoming the first Canadian to break into the top five in the WTA rankings.
After a professional career that spanned more than a decade and a half, she retired following the 2025 National Bank Open in her hometown of Montreal.
Siiblings
Eugenie Bouchard has three siblings: a fraternal twin sister named Beatrice, a younger sister named Charlotte, and a younger brother named William.
Beatrice was born six minutes before Eugenie on the same day in 1994.
Charlotte was born in 1995, and William was born in 1999.
All four children received names inspired by members of European royalty – Eugenie and Beatrice after the daughters of Britain’s Prince Andrew, Charlotte after Charlotte Casiraghi of Monaco, and William after Prince William – reflecting their mother’s strong interest in the royal family.
When the twins were around ten years old, their parents divorced.
Eugenie primarily lived with their mother, while Beatrice, Charlotte, and William lived with their father.
This separation created significant distance and tension among the siblings for many years, with limited contact during much of their adolescence and early adulthood.
In more recent years the relationships have improved, and the family has reunited for celebrations including birthdays, holidays, and Charlotte’s wedding.
Beatrice has built a career as a model and social-media influencer with a large following.
Charlotte works as a creative director and influencer and is a co-founder of a wellness-focused business; she got married in 2025.
William, the youngest, has appeared alongside family members in public settings and social-media posts.

Career
Bouchard began playing tennis at age five in Montreal and quickly showed dedication and competitive drive.
She won the Wimbledon girls’ singles title in 2012, becoming the first Canadian to claim a junior Grand Slam singles championship, and reached a junior world ranking as high as No. 2.
Turning professional, she broke through on the WTA Tour in 2013, reaching her first tour-level final in Osaka and earning recognition as a rising star.
Her breakthrough year arrived in 2014.
That season she captured her sole WTA singles title at the Nuremberg Cup on clay, advanced to the semifinals of both the Australian Open and the French Open, and reached the final at Wimbledon.
At Wimbledon, she became the first Canadian in the Open Era to contest a major singles final before falling to Petra Kvitová.
She also qualified for the WTA Finals that year.
Later career highlights included a doubles title in Auckland in 2019, partnering with Sofia Kenin, additional singles finals in subsequent seasons, participation in the 2016 Olympic Games, and consistent representation of Canada in Fed Cup and Billie Jean King Cup competition.
In 2023 she contributed to Canada’s historic first Billie Jean King Cup title.
Injuries, including shoulder issues that required surgery and a lengthy recovery, affected her consistency in later years.
She concluded her professional tennis career in 2025 after competing at the Canadian Open in Montreal, finishing with a career singles record of approximately 300 wins against 230 losses and more than $6.9 million in prize money.
Accolades
Bouchard was named WTA Newcomer of the Year in 2013 and WTA Most Improved Player in 2014.
She received Canada’s Bobbie Rosenfeld Award as the country’s top female athlete in both 2013 and 2014 and was selected Tennis Canada Female Player of the Year on multiple occasions.
Her 2014 Grand Slam results—semifinals at the Australian Open and French Open plus the Wimbledon final—remain landmark moments in Canadian tennis history, as does her status as the first Canadian to reach the WTA top five.
She helped Canada secure its first Billie Jean King Cup title in 2023 and represented her country at the Olympics.
