Alèxia Putellas Segura, widely known as Alexia Putellas, is a Spanish professional footballer from Catalonia, born on 4 February 1994 in Mollet del Vallès near Barcelona.
She plays primarily as a midfielder or forward and is regarded as one of the greatest women’s footballers of her generation.
A lifelong FC Barcelona supporter, she rose to global prominence through her technical skill, vision, leadership, and consistency at the highest level.
Putellas has long captained club and country sides, earned the nickname “La Reina” (The Queen), and helped elevate women’s football in Spain and beyond through both her performances and her advocacy.
Siblings
Alexia has one sibling, a younger sister named Alba Putellas Segura.
Alba was born on 23 March 1997 in Mollet del Vallès, making her roughly three years younger than Alexia.
The sisters grew up in a close-knit family that included their parents, Jaume Putellas Rota and Elisabet “Eli” Segura Sabaté.
Their father, a devoted Barcelona fan who supported Alexia’s early football ambitions by taking her to training and matches, died in 2012 after an illness when Alexia was 18 and Alba was still in her mid-teens.
The loss strengthened the bond among the three remaining women.
The Putellas sisters, together with their mother Eli, form a tight family unit that has provided emotional support through career highs and personal challenges.
Career
Putellas began playing football as a child in schoolyards and local settings before joining CE Sabadell at age seven.
She spent time in Barcelona’s youth setup, moved to Espanyol, where she made her senior debut, and had a season at Levante before returning to FC Barcelona in 2012 at age 18.

She remained at the club for 14 seasons, becoming a cornerstone of the team’s rise from domestic contender to European powerhouse.
During her Barcelona years, she contributed heavily as a creative midfielder and occasional forward, scored prolifically, became the club’s all-time leading scorer in the women’s team, and served as captain.
In 2026, after her contract expired, she left Barcelona and signed with English Women’s Super League side London City Lionesses, seeking a new challenge while remaining in Europe.
Internationally, she has represented Spain at youth and senior levels, contributing to major tournament successes and establishing herself as one of the most capped and influential players in the national team’s modern history.

Putellas’s individual and team achievements rank among the most impressive in women’s football.
She won the Ballon d’Or Féminin in both 2021 and 2022, becoming the first Spanish woman to claim the award and the first player of either gender from Spain to win it since Luis Suárez decades earlier.
She also secured consecutive The Best FIFA Women’s Player awards and UEFA Women’s Player of the Year honours in the same period.
With Barcelona, she accumulated a large haul of domestic and European silverware, including multiple Liga titles, around ten, Copas de la Reina, Spanish Super Cups, and four UEFA Women’s Champions League titles.
She helped the club achieve historic trebles and establish itself as a dominant force in European women’s football.
On the international stage, she was part of Spain’s 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup-winning squad and has collected additional youth and senior titles, including UEFA Women’s Under-17 European Championships and Nations League successes.
She has also received recognition such as the Creu de Sant Jordi and numerous player-of-the-season and team-of-the-year selections.
