When creating documents such as reports, assignments, or proposals, it is common practice to exclude the cover page from page numbering. Including a page number on the first page can make your document look less professional. Learning how to remove page number from cover page helps you format your work correctly and present it in a clean, organized manner. Fortunately, this can be done easily using built-in features in most word processing programs.
-
Insert Page Numbers First
Before removing the number from the cover page, ensure that page numbers are already added to your document.
Go to the Insert tab and select Page Number, then choose your preferred position such as top or bottom of the page. This will apply numbering to all pages by default.
- Choose a consistent numbering style
- Apply numbering to the entire document first
- Select a position that suits your layout
-
Open the Header or Footer Section
To modify page numbers, double-click at the top or bottom of the page where the number appears. This opens the header or footer editing mode.
You will now have access to options that control how page numbers are displayed.
- Double-click directly on the page number area
- Ensure you are editing the correct section
- Look for header and footer tools
-
Enable “Different First Page” Option
Once you are in the header or footer section, locate the option labeled “Different First Page.” This feature allows the first page to have a unique layout.
Check or enable this option, and the page number on the cover page will automatically disappear.
- Find the option in the toolbar
- Activate it with a single click
- Observe the change immediately
-
Adjust Page Numbering if Needed
After removing the number from the cover page, you may want the second page to start as page 1 instead of page 2.
To do this, go to Page Number settings, select Format Page Numbers, and set the starting number to 1.
- Ensure numbering starts correctly
- Adjust format if required
- Confirm changes before exiting
-
Close Header and Review the Document
Once you’ve made the necessary changes, close the header or footer section by clicking outside it or selecting “Close Header and Footer.”
Scroll through your document to ensure everything appears as expected, with no page number on the cover page.
- Review the entire document
- Check numbering consistency
- Save your work after confirming
