A woman was shot and wounded during a raid on a shisha joint in Dunga area, Kisumu County.
Police said the woman was admitted with gunshot wounds at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching & Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) after being shot in unclear circumstances.
Witnesses said the police who were enforcing the operation shot the woman.
Police officers stormed Atella, a popular joint located on the shores of Lake Victoria, at 8 pm on Sunday and arrested those found smoking Shisha.
However, commotion broke out as revellers attempted to stop the officers from conducting the raid.
During the melee, the officers opened fire and lobbed teargas canisters into the crowd.
The woman was rushed to JOOTRH on a motorcycle as the officers sped away.
Officers from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) have already visited the victim in hospital and recorded her statement.
Kisumu County Police Commander Hillary Toroitich says the matter is being investigated.
Four police officers were injured and two government vehicles damaged after the revellers allegedly resisted the multi-agency operation targeting unlicensed bars, shisha use and hard drugs at Atella Beach Resort in Kisumu.
The operation was conducted by a team comprising officers from the Kenya Police Service (KPS), Administration Police Service (APS), Border Patrol Unit (BPU), the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and the Kisumu County Liquor Licensing Team.
The team had visited the resort to assess compliance with liquor licensing and drug control regulations when they encountered resistance from some revellers.
Police said the revellers allegedly began pelting officers with stones, while others armed with clubs and pangas reportedly chased the officers from the premises.
The confrontation prompted officers to deploy tear gas and fire blank cartridges as they withdrew from the scene.
Despite the resistance, officers recovered eight shisha pots during the operation.
The injured officers were rushed to Inuka Hospital for treatment, while detectives from the DCI Kisumu Central have launched investigations into the incident and efforts to identify those involved in the attack on the officers.
IPOA is in the meantime investigating the incident.
