Matthijs comes from a close-knit family and has two younger siblings who are twins: a brother named Wouter and a sister named Fleur, who are two years his junior.

Wouter has followed a path in football as well, playing as a centre-back at amateur levels, including for clubs like FC Abcoude.

Fleur has also been involved in football, competing at a high amateur level for an Amsterdam team, and she has frequently attended her brother’s matches while maintaining a supportive yet grounded perspective on his career.

    Career

De Ligt’s professional journey began at Ajax, where he made his first-team debut at the age of 17 in 2016.

He rapidly became a key player, captaining the team and leading them to an Eredivisie title in the 2018-19 season while reaching the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

His performances caught the attention of Europe’s elite clubs, resulting in a high-profile transfer to Juventus in 2019 for around €75 million.

At Juventus, he adapted to Serie A and contributed to domestic successes before moving to Bayern Munich in 2022, where he added a Bundesliga title to his resume.

In August 2024, de Ligt transferred to Manchester United, reuniting with former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag.

He signed a five-year contract and has since become an important part of the team’s defensive setup in the Premier League.

Throughout his career, he has also been a regular for the Dutch national team, debuting at a young age and participating in major tournaments.

    Accolades

De Ligt’s trophy cabinet includes multiple league titles and cups from his time at Ajax, Juventus, and Bayern Munich, such as the Eredivisie, KNVB Cup, Serie A, Coppa Italia, and Bundesliga.

On the international stage, he helped the Netherlands reach the UEFA Nations League final in 2019.

Individually, he has received numerous honors, most notably becoming the first defender to win the Golden Boy award in 2018.

Other accolades include the Johan Cruyff Prize, Dutch Footballer of the Year, and various youth tournament best player awards, underscoring his exceptional talent from an early age.
