    Early life

Fred Durst was born William Frederick Durst on August 20, 1970, in Jacksonville, Florida. During his childhood, his family lived in several locations, including Orlando, Florida, Cherryville, North Carolina, and Gastonia, North Carolina.

As a teenager, Durst developed a deep interest in hip-hop culture, learning breakdancing, DJing, beatboxing, skateboarding, and rapping. At the same time, he became heavily influenced by heavy metal and punk rock, interests that would later shape his signature musical style.

After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy but left after about two years. Returning to Jacksonville, he worked as both a tattoo artist and landscaper while pursuing his dream of creating a band that blended rap with heavy rock.

    Limp Bizkit’s rise to fame

In 1994, Durst formed Limp Bizkit alongside bassist Sam Rivers, drummer John Otto, and guitarist Wes Borland. The band quickly built a following with its aggressive fusion of heavy guitar riffs, hip-hop rhythms, and energetic live performances.

Their breakthrough came after members of Korn heard the group’s demo recordings and helped them secure a recording contract.

Limp Bizkit released its debut album, “Three Dollar Bill, Y’all$,” in 1997. Although it achieved modest commercial success, the record introduced the band’s unique sound and included a hard-hitting cover of George Michael’s “Faith.”

The band’s popularity exploded in 1999 with the release of “Significant Other.” The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and featured major hits such as “Nookie,” “Break Stuff,” and “Re-Arranged,” turning Limp Bizkit into one of the biggest rock acts in the world.

    Multi-platinum success

Limp Bizkit reached another level of commercial success with “Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water,” released in 2000.

The album debuted at No. 1 and sold more than one million copies during its first week in the United States. It featured several of the band’s best-known songs, including:

    • Rollin’ (Air Raid Vehicle)
    • My Way
    • My Generation
    • Take a Look Around

The album eventually achieved multi-platinum certification and cemented Limp Bizkit’s place among the biggest rock bands of the era.

The group later released albums including:

    • Results May Vary (2003)
    • The Unquestionable Truth (Part 1) (2005)
    • Gold Cobra (2011)
    • Still Sucks (2021)

Despite changing musical trends, Limp Bizkit has remained a successful touring act with a loyal international fan base.

    Film directing career

Outside of music, Durst established himself as a filmmaker.

He directed several feature films, including:

    • The Education of Charlie Banks (2007)
    • The Longshots (2008)
    • The Fanatic (2019), starring John Travolta

He has also directed numerous music videos and appeared as an actor in several film and television productions.

    Universal Music royalty lawsuit

In 2024, Fred Durst and Limp Bizkit filed a high-profile lawsuit against Universal Music Group over unpaid royalties.

According to the lawsuit, the band alleged that flaws in Universal’s royalty accounting system prevented artists from receiving millions of dollars they were owed. Durst claimed his business representatives discovered substantial unpaid royalties after gaining access to the label’s accounting portal.

The lawsuit seeks more than $200 million in damages and challenges longstanding royalty practices within the music industry. Universal has denied the allegations.

    Personal life

Durst has been married several times and is the father of two children.

Over the years, he has frequently attracted media attention for outspoken opinions, public feuds with fellow musicians, and controversial comments on political and cultural issues. Despite the criticism, he has remained one of rock music’s most recognizable personalities.

    Real estate

Durst has owned several notable properties over the years.

He previously listed a Hollywood Hills home for sale after purchasing it in 2014. During California’s devastating wildfires in 2018, he revealed that another residence had been destroyed, resulting in the loss of personal belongings and valuable music equipment.

In 2021, he purchased a home in West Hollywood, California, for approximately $3 million.
