A district accountant was robbed of Sh600,000 after an armed gang along the Bungoma abducted him and a motorcycle rider–Chwele Road in Bungoma County.
Police said the robbery occurred on Thursday at Sikusi area.
The victim, a District Accountant in Sirisia, had withdrawn Sh600,000 from KCB Bungoma and was travelling on a boda boda when they noticed a vehicle following them from Bungoma town at about 12.30 pm.
The suspects, believed to be five men, one of whom was armed with a pistol, intercepted the motorcycle, forced the two victims into their vehicle and drove them along a murram road to an unknown destination.
The gang robbed the accountant of the Sh600,000, his national identity card, a KCB withdrawal slip and a Tecno Spark 8 mobile phone.
The motorcycle rider was robbed of Sh390 and an M10 mobile phone. His TVS Star motorcycle was abandoned at the scene.
The victims were later dumped in a maize plantation in the Kimilili area, from where they made their way to Kimilili Police Station and reported the incident.
Police officers visited the scene and recovered the abandoned motorcycle. Investigations have been launched to trace the suspects and recover the stolen property.
The investigators believe the attackers had prior information about the cash transactions.
They visited the bank and sought to review security cameras’ footage on the possible attackers. There is a believe the gang was in the bank monitoring the transactions before the trailed the victim and struck.
This has been a trend in some urban areas amid efforts by police to address the same.
The police have managed to bust some of the gangs in the trend in Nairobi and Machakos where many people had reported of being attacked after leaving banks.
The hunt for more suspects is ongoing, police said Friday adding the focus is on the banking institutions where the transactions happen before the attacks.
