Senior Principal Magistrate Martin Kinyua Mutegi, attached to Kangema Law Courts, was Monday charged with receiving a bribe.

This follows a favourable High Court ruling that paved the way for his arraignment and plea-taking.

Mutegi, who had recently been suspended by his employer, was arraigned before the Anti-Corruption Magistrate’s Court alongside his co-accused, a Senior Probation Officer based at Kangema.

Mutegi was charged with receiving a bribe contrary to Section 6(1) as read with Section 18(1) of the Anti-Bribery Act, among other charges. He denied the charges

The court granted him a bond of Sh800,000 with a surety of a similar amount, or an alternative cash bail of Sh400,000. Prosecution did not oppose the bail terms. The court further directed the accused not to interfere with witnesses in any manner.

The arraignment followed the High Court’s decision to decline to grant conservatory orders sought by Mutegi, in a petition opposed by the DPP.

The ruling cleared the way for prosecution to proceed with the charges against him.

Consequently, prosecution, led by Assistant Directors of Public Prosecutions Duncan Ondimu,David Ndege and Eliphas Ombati, Principal Prosecution Counsel Peninah Mwaniki and Prosecution Counsels Mr. Abdisalam Bore and Ms. Anne Charlotte, successfully secured the plea-taking before Hon. Harrison Barasa Omwima.

The matter will come up for mention on September 7, 2026 for further directions.
