Early Life
Juan José Soto Pacheco was born on October 25, 1998, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He is the son of Belkis Pacheco and Juan Soto Sr.
His father played catcher in a local baseball league and worked as a salesman. Soto grew up around the game and began developing his baseball skills at a young age.
He has a younger brother, Elian Soto, who also pursued a career in professional baseball. Elian plays outfield and third base and followed his brother into the sport.
Professional Baseball
Soto signed with the Washington Nationals in July 2015 as an international free agent. He received a $1.5 million signing bonus at the age of 16.
He made his professional debut in 2016 with the Gulf Coast League Nationals. The young outfielder immediately showed why the Nationals had invested heavily in him.
In 45 games, Soto hit .361 with a .550 slugging percentage and a .960 OPS. His 93 total bases also led the league. His outstanding season earned him the Gulf Coast League MVP award.

The contract carries an average annual value of $51 million and contains no deferrals.
Soto also received a $75 million signing bonus. Because he was still a full-time Florida resident when he received the bonus, the arrangement reportedly allowed him to save approximately $8 million in taxes on that portion of the deal.
The Mets contract surpassed Shohei Ohtani’s 10-year, $700 million agreement with the Los Angeles Dodgers in total guaranteed value, although Ohtani’s deal contains substantial deferred payments.
