Detectives have recovered more assorted cigarettes, two sacks of loose dried tobacco and cash believed to be proceeds from the sale of illicit cigarettes during an intelligence-led operation in Githunguri Township, Kiambu County.

The latest seizure follows an earlier operation in which detectives recovered assorted cigarettes and bundles of suspected counterfeit Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) excise duty stamps from premises linked to businessman Patrick Muiruri Mwangi.

The cash, comprising notes and coins, was found stashed in polythene bags at the premises and is suspected to have been generated from cigarette sales.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said preliminary investigations indicate that the premises may have been used to distribute and sell uncustomed and smuggled cigarettes.

Investigators also suspect that the premises were being used to illegally package and brand tobacco products using established trademarks.

The operation targeted Mwangi, who detectives suspect of being involved in the illegal sale and distribution of uncustomed and smuggled cigarettes.

Acting on intelligence, detectives mounted undercover surveillance on two premises linked to the suspect and monitored his movements and activities before conducting the search.

During the initial operation, detectives recovered assorted boxes and loose packets of cigarettes, as well as bundles of KRA excise duty stamps suspected to be counterfeit.

The latest search resulted in the recovery of the two sacks of loose dried tobacco and the cash believed to be proceeds from the suspected illicit trade.

The premises have been secured as detectives work with the KRA Investigations and Enforcement team to examine the seized items and establish the extent of the suspected illegal operation.

The suspect, however, managed to evade arrest and remains at large. Detectives have launched a manhunt as they pursue leads to locate and arrest him.

“The scene has been processed by CSI detectives and KRA officers, as investigations continue. Meanwhile, a manhunt for the suspect who is still at large is ongoing,” DCI said.
