Knut Issues A 14-Day Strike Notice After Talks With TSC Flop

The Kenya Union of Teachers (KNUT) has issued a 14-day strike notice to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) after talks between the two hit a snag.

The two met last week for talks about teachers’ transfers, promotions and appraisals in which TSC issued a statement yesterday accusing Knut of issuing fresh demands.

“We have been shocked by TSC statement as it is full of lies and we are giving them 14 days to address our grievances or face the consequences,” said Knut Secretary General Wilson Sossion.

Sossion denied claims by TSC that they walked out of the negotiations, saying that instead TSC asked for time to review their demands.

“TSC has silently transferred 110 union officials from different parts of the country to weaken KNUT, but we shall not be cowed,” added Sossion. However, TSC in a statement indicated that the bone of contention was about 85 teachers.

On promotions, Sossion said, “By failing to promote teachers as enshrined in the code of regulations, the employer is denying teachers Sh6.6 billion annually. We shall not stop until our demands are addressed,” he said.

In a statement to newsrooms, TSC CEO Nancy Macharia said: “All TSC employees have a right under article 27 of the Constitution to be treated fairly without being subjected to any discrimination. It is therefore unreasonable and discriminatory for KNUT to demand different treatment for 85 teachers out of the 321,007 in public learning institutions on account of their elective positions in the union.’’
