Crucial data went up in flames after fire broke up at the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure headquarters in Nairobi on Tuesday.

The records, said to be on roads and other infrastructure projects, include what officials claim tenders on major infrastructural projects.

The fire is said to have affected a registry section of Ministry of Mining located at Transom House offices on the 11th floor before spreading to the chief architect’s office on the 12th floor.

The reports have raised more questions than answers, with some questioning the coincidence of events linked to popular Toi market inferno in Kibera, Nairobi.

Some have linked the two events saying Toi market inferno was a decoy.

There are no clear reports if the ministry had a backup of the data lost.

According to a security guard account, his attention was drawn by the smell of smoke at about 3am.

He then raised alarm, but by the time fire engines arrived at the scene, most data had been damaged.

Nairobi police boss Philip Ndolo confirmed the incident saying detectives are reviewing CCTV footage at the ministry to determine how the fire started.

On his part, Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia promised investigations will be undertaken to unravel circumstances that led to the incident.

On Toi market fire, opposition leader Raila Odinga accused land grabbers of being behind the fire.

“..kuna wale wanyakuzi ambao wananyakua wakiona kiwanja mahali wanaingia wananyakua.. nina hakika kwamba hao ndio wamefanya hii njama ya kuchoma kesho waje na askari hapa waanze kujenga (I am confident that notorious land grabbers are behind this incident),” he said.

According to Odinga, this is not the first time the market is experiencing the unfortunate incident that has left many counting millions in loses.

“…Wameleta hasara kubwa sana kwa wafanya biashara hapa (They have caused huge loses to the busines men here),” he said.

“Hatutakubali hayo (We won’t allow this),” he added.

No casualties were reported during the incident.
