Another Kenyan killed on frontlines fighting for Russia

Ukrainian Defence Forces released images of another Kenyan reportedly killed on the frontlines while fighting for Russia in the Donetsk region.

This is the latest such news affecting dozens of Kenyans who were recruited and taken to Russia to join the war with Ukraine.

The intelligence arm of the Ukraine defence forces identified the man as Clinton Nyapara Mogesa, a Kenyan citizen, born in 1997.

The agency added the body was found at one of the positions held by Russian occupation

It stated that Mogesa had been living and working in Qatar before signing a contract with the Russian army, which deployed him to one of its assault units.

“After a brief period of training, Mogesa was killed during a so-called ‘meat assault’ in the Donetsk region. Russian forces did not evacuate the body of the deceased foreign mercenary, and his family received neither compensation nor any explanation from the Russian side,” the statement said.

According to the military, Mogesa was also found in possession of two other Kenyan passports, believed to belong to individuals recruited under similar circumstances and potentially destined for future assault operations.

“Clinton Mogesa could have continued to live and work safely in prosperous Qatar. Instead, he became yet another confirmation that, for the Russian army, foreign nationals are treated as expendable resources, sent to their deaths,” the agency added.

The statement warned foreign citizens against accepting such forms of employment in Russia.

Scores of Kenyans have reportedly been caught up on the frontlines in Russia after responding to fake recruitment calls that led to their enlistment in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.

On Friday night, Foreign Affairs Minister Musalia Mudavadi revealed that Nairobi plans to engage directly with Russian authorities through an official visit, aiming to discuss measures to protect its citizens.

He said the government would rely on dialogue and diplomacy to manage the issue and prevent further risks to Kenyans.

“Travelling to Russia carries a real risk of being forcibly deployed to assault units without adequate training and with little to no chance of survival,” the Ukrainian military intelligence cautioned.

Dozens of Kenyans are believed to have died in the area while fighting for Russia. The recruitment process of the group is under probe in Kenya.
