Arjun Atwal is an Indian professional golfer born on March 20, 1973, in Asansol, West Bengal, India.

He grew up in a Sikh family in Kolkata and began playing golf seriously as a teenager at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club.

Atwal attended St. James’ School in Kolkata before moving to the United States with his brother for better educational opportunities.

He completed high school in Westbury, New York, and played college golf at Nassau Community College on Long Island.

Atwal turned professional in 1995 and has become a pioneering figure in Indian golf as the first player born in India to earn full membership on the PGA Tour and the first to win a tournament on that tour.

    Siblings

Arjun has one brother named Govind Singh Atwal.

Govind has a hearing impairment, and this factor influenced the family’s decision to send both brothers to the United States in the early 1990s for superior educational prospects.

Govind also played golf and was instrumental in helping Arjun connect with coaching opportunities at Nassau Community College.

    Career

Atwal’s professional career spans over three decades and is defined by groundbreaking achievements for Indian golfers on the international stage.

After turning pro in 1995, he quickly rose on the Asian Tour, earning Rookie of the Year honors that season.

He accumulated eight victories on the Asian Tour, establishing himself as one of the region’s dominant players in the late 1990s and 2000s.

Atwal secured three wins on the European Tour (now DP World Tour), beginning with the 2002 Caltex Singapore Masters, followed by the 2003 Carlsberg Malaysian Open and the 2008 Maybank Malaysian Open.

In 2004, he became the first Indian-born player to earn a PGA Tour card by finishing seventh at Qualifying School.

His most historic moment came in 2010 at the Wyndham Championship, where he entered as a Monday qualifier, led wire-to-wire, and won by one stroke over David Toms with a score of 20-under par.

This victory made him the first Indian-born winner on the PGA Tour.

He also claimed a win on the Nationwide Tour (now Korn Ferry Tour) and later added the 2014 Dubai Open on the Asian Tour.

Atwal has competed in all four major championships, including the Masters in 2011, and has continued playing into his 50s on the PGA Tour Champions while balancing family life.

    Accolades

Atwal received the prestigious Arjuna Award from the Government of India for sporting excellence.

On the Asian Tour, he won the Order of Merit in 2003 and was named Players’ Player of the Year that same season, along with Rookie of the Year in 1995.

His eight Asian Tour titles place him tied for sixth on the all-time wins list.

He earned three European Tour victories and one PGA Tour win at the 2010 Wyndham Championship, a milestone that opened doors for subsequent Indian players.

Additional honors include recognition as Asian Tour Player of the Year and induction into various golf halls or awards for his contributions to elevating the sport in India.
