Dr Mukhisa Kituyi has been confirmed by the UN General Assembly for a further 4 years as the Secretary General of the UN Trade and Development body UNCTAD. The former Trade Minister who is the seventh Secretary General of the global body will start his second term in September 2017 and end the same in August 2021. Dr Mukhisa Kituyi served as MP for 15 years and Trade and Industry Minister from 2002 to 2007. He was the former CEO of Kenya Institute of Governance and a fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington.

Human Rights Watch is demanding that Kenyan authorities urgently investigate allegations of threats, coercion and intimidation between community members in Naivasha area. In a report compiled after Human Rights Watch interviewed Naivasha residents, many of them described threats and intimidation between community members, “but said that police have failed to investigate the threats, prosecute the culprits or protect residents.” Naivasha was among the areas with the worst 2007-2008 post-election violence, in which inter-ethnic rivalries over land and power, stoked by politicians, left over 1,100 people dead. An ODM supporter for the Wajir Senatorial seat was caught on video fighting someone believed to be a supporter turned critic. Abdirahman Abdikadir (Jua) was walking to the Jamia mosque when a Wajir voter asked him a question which he didn’t like. A Nairobi blogger was last night attacked and left for dead in Nairobi while walking in the streets. According to sources close to the blogger Susan Mukami, she was from Lavington when the matatu she was in decided to end the journey at the Koja Stage and not Odeon Cinema as is the case. Some muggers attacked her and when she tried to resist and fight them, she was stabbed and left bleeding.
