Nearly 500 civilians have been confirmed killed in Sudan’s North Darfur in the past two weeks, the United Nations said Friday, condemning “horrifying” numbers of deaths and widespread sexual violence. Federal prosecutors on Thursday filed a formal notice of intent to seek the death penalty for Luigi Mangione in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. This comes one day before Mangione’s arraignment hearing in federal court, which is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday. A US judge ruled Thursday that Donald Trump cannot legally withhold federal funds from authorities offering limited protections to undocumented migrants, known as “sanctuary cities,” as the president presses his aggressive mass deportation effort. California’s economy has overtaken that of the country of Japan, making the US state the fourth largest global economic force. Governor Gavin Newsom touted new data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the US Bureau of Economic Analysis showing California’s growth. Police shot and killed an armed 30-year-old man at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport on Thursday morning, police said. Two officers shot at the man around 07:00 local time (12:00 GMT), Ontario police’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU), said in a statement. A contractor was attacked and killed by a mob after he fatally stabbed a female owner of a building he was constructing in Kimilili, Bungoma County. The body of the woman was found in an incomplete house in Makhonge village after her brutal murder. She was the owner of the house under construction, police said. Gunmen shot and killed two people in an ambush along Nginyang-Marigat road in Baringo County. The deceased included a lorry driver and his passenger, police said.
