A passenger plane lost a section of its fuselage in mid-air, forcing it to make an emergency landing in the US state of Oregon on Friday. The Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 Max 9 returned to Portland 35 minutes into its flight to California after an outer section, including a window, fell. Alaska said 177 passengers and crew were on board and it “landed safely”. The airline said it would “temporarily” ground all 65 of its 737 Max 9 aircraft to conduct inspections. Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations’ homicide Saturday sealed off Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s official residence in Milimani Estate, Meru town for a search.  It’s not clear whether they are investigating the murder of blogger and political activist Daniel Muthiani, alias Sniper. A child was Friday swept away by raging floods in Mashimoni area in Kibera, Nairobi following a heavy downpour that pounded the city.  Property was also destroyed following the heavy rainfall. Many were displaced. Nairobi County Disaster Management and Coordination team led by Chief Officer Bramwel Simiyu on Saturday indicated that it is following up on the incident in Kibera. “The waters have subsided in the majority of the areas impacted last night due to the heavy rainfall experienced. Journalists from several media houses and police officers were Friday night injured in an assault during a raid by the National Authority for the Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (Nacada) in Nairobi.  The drama happened at Kettle House Bar and Grill in Lavington, Nairobi, police and the victims said. The officials were targeting the joint for allowing revelers to smoke shisha. It is linked to politician Millicent Omanga. Police are holding a suspect in connection with the brutal murder of socialite Starlet Wahu Mwangi in Nairobi.  Wahu, 26 is said to be a younger sister of controversial evangelical pastor Kanyari. German actor Christian Oliver and his two daughters were killed in a plane crash in the Caribbean, police say. The star of films Speed Racer and Valkyrie had left the nation of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) and was en route to St Lucia on Thursday. “Moments after taking off, the aircraft experienced difficulties and plummeted into the ocean,” investigators say. The US Supreme Court said it will hear a historic case to determine if Donald Trump can run for president. The justices agreed to take up Mr Trump’s appeal against a decision by Colorado to remove him from the 2024 ballot in that state. The case will be heard in February and the ruling will apply nationwide. At least three people were Friday shot dead by bandits while on a mission to receive four stolen goats at Kerio River in Marakwet County. Police said the three including a 61-year-old man, a 43-year-old man and a teacher at Kombases Primary School aged 32 years, were all members of the Endo Peace Committee operating in the area. The chief executive of the US gun lobby group the National Rifle Association (NRA) has resigned, the organisation has said. Wayne LaPierre, 74, will step down as of 31 January after leading the NRA for more than three decades. His resignation comes days before a New York civil trial, in which he and other senior leaders are accused of misusing NRA funds. Immigration officials said Friday the first batch of visa-free foreigners landed in Kenya four days after the program was scheduled to commence. Principal Secretary Julius Bitok who led a team on a fact-finding mission said the visitors arrived at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) using the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). One ETA costs Sh4,600, applied via the eCitizen platform. He said over 5,000 ETA applications have already been received, with 2,141 approved so far.  The ETA application replaces the visa, after the President’s directive that the Kenya would be visa free beginning 2024. A Rwandan woman and her brother were charged with conspiring to kill her Swiss boyfriend. Antoinette Uwineza, also known as Dardeh PM Kasswen had a life sentence for another murder overturned on appeal in 2020. She was charged with conspiring with her brother Eddy Kwizera to kill Helbling Guico Paul. The siblings were also accused of conspiring to steal 850 euros (about Sh146,489) and other valuables. Uwineza and Kwizera, who are represented by lawyer John Swaka, were released on a cash bail of Sh200,000 each with one surety, pending the mention of the case on January 27. Uwineza was jailed…

Detectives are seeking 21 days to hold five suspects arrested in connection with the murder of Meru County-based blogger Daniel Muthiani alias Sniper. Grocery giant Carrefour will stop selling Pepsi products in France, citing “unacceptable price increases”. The supermarket started putting up signs in stores on Thursday to inform customers of the decision, which will affect products such as Pepsi soda, Doritos and Quaker cereals. Pepsi said it would continue to try to negotiate in “good faith”. The spat comes as France continues to grapple with food prices that are rising uncomfortably quickly. Security officials heightened operations Friday as Kenya marked four years after a deadly terror attack on a military base in Lamu County. The attack took place on January 5, 2020 leaving three Americans – one U.S. military service member and two contractors – killed.
