Police are investigating the death of a school principal whose body was found floating on a river days after he went missing in Lugari, Kakamega County.

The body of Simon Isiaho Shange who was the principal of Munyuki Secondary was found floating on Kiparen River on Saturday morning.

The discovery on Saturday prompted a protest in the area with locals and students from the school invading and attacking Lumakanda police station.

Police said the angry mob damaged window panes of the station and some cars that were parked there.

This was hours after the body had been recovered and moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy.

The cause of the death is yet to be known and police argued they were pursuing both drowning and murder theories.

The protesters were later dispersed from the scene as police vowed justice for the death.

The controversy surrounding the incident started November 3, 2025 after a road accident along the Eldoret–Malaba Highway, in which the Munyuki High School principal was reportedly involved before his mysterious disappearance.

This has prompted speculations in the area which has turned political.

Western police commander Issa Mohamud said they are determined to solve the saga.

He said a team of experts is handling the incident with an aim of solving it.

Lugari Member of Parliament Nabii Nabwera has threatened to sue bloggers for allegedly publishing false and defamatory statements linking him to the disappearance and now subsequent death of the principal.

Through his lawyer, Danstan Omari, the legislator has issued demand letters to George Opunga Tamata, Peter Amunga, and Simon Asievela, accusing them of circulating malicious claims that he orchestrated the road accident involving Shange.

In the letters dated between November 7 and 8, Nabwera, has given the three bloggers twelve hours to pull down all posts made on online platforms including Malava Online and Kakamega Post, issue a public apology, and pay Sh20 million in compensation for defamation.

“Our client is unequivocal that the statements by yourself are false, inaccurate, and ill-intended to taint his otherwise shining name and record in the constituency,” the letters read in part.

“Your publications are politically motivated and meant to drag his name into the mud.”

Omari further says that Nabwera was a close friend of the principal and has ensured equitable distribution of resources in Lugari Constituency, terming the bloggers’ posts as baseless and malicious.
