A man found guilty of impersonating Inspector General of Police, Joseph Boinnet has died in prison.

John Kibowen Cheboiwo died at the Industrial Area Prison on June 15, 2018 under unclear circumstances.

The Computer Science graduate is said to have created Facebook accounts impersonating Boinnet and former DCI boss Ndegwa Muhoro.

He is said to have defrauded unsuspecting Kenyans of large amounts of money, promising to expedite their cases.

Cheboiwo collapsed and was pronounced dead on arrival at Kenyatta National Hospital, Commissioner of Prisons Isaiah Osugo confirmed, adding that the inmate did not pass away at the prison.

Mr Osugo has assured the deceased’s family that investigations into the unfortunate incident are on going.

His mother, Jane Anyango, on her part says that she only learned about his death on 17 June, two days after his death.

“I was told that the body had been taken to City Mortuary. I went there and found it. The records there indicated ‘sudden death’,” Ms Anyango said.

An autopsy conducted at the City Mortuary did not show a definite cause of death. The family has sought a second opinion hence transferring the remains to Chiromo Mortuary where another postmortem will be conducted.

Government pathologist Johansen Oduor said that Cheboiwo’s neck had injuries on the left side, part of his brain was swollen, and there were blood clots on the tips of his fingers.

“It does not add up that a person who collapsed could have signs of strangulation and such injuries,” his mother added.
