Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court Martha Koome has named four courts that will now handle cases of possession and trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances with both local and international links.

In a gazette notice dated January 16, 2026, Koome said the move is part of efforts to strengthen the fight against drugs in the country.

The courts designated for the task are the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) Magistrates’ Court, Kahawa Magistrates’ Court, Mombasa Magistrates’ Court and Busia Magistrates’ Court. The decision takes effect immediately.

The move comes as President William Ruto intensifies the government’s campaign against alcohol and drug abuse.

In a statement shared on X on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, the President said the government will strengthen enforcement, expand treatment services and improve coordination among state agencies to curb drug trafficking and abuse.

He said the fight against drugs will involve law enforcement, health services, county governments and border agencies working together, rather than operating in isolation.

The renewed focus follows public concern over the growing impact of drugs on young people, families and national security, with the government now treating the issue as both a public health and security matter.
