Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK) has asked the opposition, NASA to refrain from ‘blanket lynching’ the mobile telecommunications operators contracted by the IEBC to aid in transmitting election results during the August 8 elections.

IEBC contracted Safaricom, Airtel and Telkom to provide a medium of the end-to-end transmission of election results in line with the Elections (Technology) Regulations, 2017.

In a statement, the Authority confirmed that it was aware of the move.

It divided the country into three regions and in line with its ICT regulator role, instructed the mobile operators to report cases of transmission failures.

”In line with our oversight responsibility as the ICT sector regulator, the Authority directed the mobile operators to report any cases of transmission failure to us.  No cases of transmission failure were reported to us,” Director General Francis Wangusi said.

Raila Odinga on Tuesday accused Safaricom of colluding with the IEBC and OT Morpho to rig the elections in favour of Jubilee’s President Uhuru Kenyatta.

He said that the mobile operator had two VPNs set up where the one transmitting results locally to the IEBC was never set up.

He alleged that the working VPN terminated results at a cloud server registered in Spain but operated from France under the control of OT Morpho.

CAK has urged the opposition to report election malpractices to the relevant law enforcement agencies.

Wangusi added that the continued attacks on Safaricom would drive investors away and cause Kenyans to lose faith and confidence in technology.

”In this regard, we urge political actors to canvass their agenda in a responsible manner in order to avoid putting into jeopardy the impressive investment and other gains that Kenya has made in the local ICT sector. In the same vein, we implore politicians to report any alleged election malpractices on the part of industry players to the relevant law enforcement agencies.”
