A court directed two suspects in the murder of Kasipul MP Charles Were to undergo mental assessment.

The two are expected to be charged with murder. This is after the state concluded investigations into the case. Isaack Kuria and Allan Omondi Ogolla appeared in court virtually on Wednesday, where Justice Margaret Muigai directed that they be given legal representation.

The court heard that the suspects are being held separately and will be presented in court as they pursue other investigative and prosecutorial measures, including plea bargaining.

The matter will be mentioned on June 18 for further directions.

Were was shot dead on April 30 in the Nairobi evening traffic at the City mortuary roundabout on Ngong Road by a gunman whose accomplice was riding a motorbike.

The gunman alighted from the motorbike at a red light and opened fire at close range before fleeing the scene with the getaway rider.

Elsewhere at Kibera law court, other suspects William Imoli Shigali alias Imo, Edwin Oduor Odhiambo alias Machuani and Ebel Ochieng alias Dave Calo appeared in court to answer to the murder charges of Were.

They were charged that onthe night of the 30th day of April 2025, at about 7.40 pm at the City Mortuary Roundabout along Ngong Road in Kilimani Sub County within Nairobi County, jointly with others, not before the court, murdered Were.

    They denied the charges. .

Omondi was Were’s bodyguard and alongside the slain MP’s driver Walter Owino, they are accused of being part of the criminal syndicate behind the murder plot.

Calo was represented by lawyers Danstun Omari, Sam Nyaberi, Cliff Ombeta, Shadrack Wambui, Kelvin Kondago, Stanley Kinyanjui and Martina Swiga. .

On Tuesday, Dennis Sewe Manyasi and Walter Awino Owino driver to MP were released by JKIA magistrate’s court after the prosecution said the two are expected to be state witnesses against accused persons.

The now witnesses held prayers with their families outside the court after they were released. One of the suspects had earlier alleged he received a down payment of Sh850,000, a claim partially substantiated after police recovered part of the money from his home in US dollars.

The police said the murder was planned way before its execution with meetings within and outside Nairobi. It has been linked to local politics.

There were up to 12 suspects who had been arrested over the murder probe. Five of them including businessman Philip Aroko were released unconditionally after the probe failed to like them to the murder.
