    Career

Nurse’s hockey journey began in Hamilton, where he developed through minor hockey before joining the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).

In the OHL, he emerged as a top prospect, earning recognition for both his on-ice performance and academic achievements.

He made his NHL debut with the Oilers during the 2014-15 season and quickly became a regular on the blue line.

Over more than 12 NHL seasons, all with Edmonton, Nurse has played nearly 800 regular-season games, accumulating around 88 goals and 236 assists for 324 points while providing steady defensive contributions, physical play, and leadership.

He signed an eight-year, $74 million contract extension in 2021 with a $9.25 million annual cap hit that runs through the 2029-30 season.

Nurse has served as an alternate captain and played a key role in the Oilers’ recent postseason runs, including deep playoff appearances.

His career has featured strong two-way play, with notable offensive peaks such as a career-high 16 goals in the shortened 2020-21 season.

Internationally, he has represented Canada at various levels, contributing to a gold medal at the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship and earning a silver medal with the senior team at the 2019 IIHF World Championship.

    Accolades

In the OHL, Nurse was named to the Second All-Star Team and won the Bobby Smith Trophy as the league’s Scholastic Player of the Year in 2013 for combining strong academic performance with hockey excellence.

At the international level, he was recognized as one of the Top Three Players on Team Canada at the 2015 World Juniors and helped secure gold that year.

He has also represented Canada at senior World Championships, contributing to a silver medal in 2019.

While he has not yet won the Stanley Cup, Nurse has been a consistent presence on a contending Oilers team and has received consideration in Norris Trophy discussions for top defenseman during his peak offensive seasons.
