David Pastrňák is a prominent Czech professional ice hockey player who serves as a right winger and alternate captain for the Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League.

Born on May 25, 1996, in Havířov, Czech Republic, he is widely known by the nickname “Pasta” for his dynamic scoring ability, quick release, and entertaining personality on and off the ice.

Pastrňák has established himself as one of the league’s most consistent and prolific goal scorers, blending elite skill with a strong work ethic.

    Siblings

David has one older brother named Jakub Pastrňák, who is approximately five years his senior.

The two brothers grew up together in a modest two-bedroom apartment in Havířov with their mother, Marcela Ziembova, for much of their childhood after their parents separated when David was young.

Jakub works as a policeman in the Czech Republic and has occasionally appeared alongside David at hockey events, such as when he wore a disguise to support his brother at the World Championships.

    Career

Pastrňák’s hockey journey began early, influenced heavily by his father Milan, a former professional player and coach who introduced him to the sport at age three.

After his parents separated, David split time between living primarily with his mother and brother and weekend visits with his father.

Financial hardships marked much of his youth until he secured an agent at age 13, which helped cover equipment costs.

At 16, he moved to Sweden to play for Sodertalje in the second division, a difficult transition that tested his resilience.

Tragically, his father passed away from cancer in 2013 at age 51, just before David’s 17th birthday, yet David channeled that motivation into his development.

Selected by the Boston Bruins in the first round, 25th overall, of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, Pastrňák made his NHL debut later that year.

He quickly progressed from a promising rookie to a star player, breaking out in the 2016-17 season.

Over his career, he has formed a key part of the Bruins’ top lines, including memorable partnerships on the “Perfection Line” with Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand.

Known for his lethal shot and playmaking, Pastrňák has consistently delivered high goal and point totals, achieving multiple 100-point seasons in recent years and ranking among the Bruins’ all-time leaders in several offensive categories.

He has participated in deep playoff runs, including a Stanley Cup Final appearance in 2019, and remains a vital contributor as the team contends in the competitive Atlantic Division.

    Accolades

Pastrňák has been selected to the NHL All-Star Game four times (2019, 2020, 2023, and 2024), winning the All-Star Game MVP in 2020.

In the 2019-20 season, he shared the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy as the NHL’s leading goal scorer with 48 goals.

He has also earned spots on the NHL First All-Star Team twice (2020 and 2023) and the Second All-Star Team in other seasons, while finishing as a Hart Trophy finalist for league MVP.

On the international level, Pastrňák has represented Czechia with distinction, contributing to a bronze medal at the 2022 IIHF World Championship and a gold medal in 2024.

He claimed silver at the 2014 IIHF World U18 Championship as a junior.

Domestically in Czechia, he has dominated the Golden Hockey Stick award as the country’s top male player, winning it multiple times—including a record streak—trailing only legends like Jaromir Jagr in total victories.

Additional distinctions include being the youngest player in NHL history to record six points in a single playoff game.
