The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Homicide Directorate has taken over investigations into the brutal killing of gospel artist Rachel Wandeto, who succumbed to severe burn injuries days after she was attacked and set ablaze in Mwiki, Kasarani, Nairobi.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, the DCI said preliminary investigations indicate that Wandeto was attacked on the night of May 16 while walking home along 11th Street near Obama Road in Mwiki.

According to investigators, the gospel singer encountered a group of three men who allegedly assaulted her, doused her with a flammable substance and set her on fire before fleeing the scene.

“She was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital the same day, suffering from approximately 75 per cent burn injuries. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment at the facility on May 18, 2026,” the DCI said.

The agency said homicide detectives are pursuing all leads to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and apprehend those behind what it described as a heinous crime.

“Detectives are tirelessly working to uncover the full circumstances surrounding this heinous crime and to identify and apprehend all individuals involved in its planning and execution,” the DCI stated.

The agency condemned the attack, reiterating its commitment to ensuring justice for the slain artist.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, relatives and friends of the deceased and assure the public and the bereaved family that investigations will be conducted thoroughly, impartially and without fear or favour. Those found culpable will face the full force of the law,” the DCI added.

Wandeto had been fighting for her life at Kenyatta National Hospital after suffering extensive burns following the attack. She was initially rushed to Uzima Uhai Hospital before being transferred to KNH for specialised treatment due to the severity of her injuries.

According to police, members of the public alerted authorities after the victim was taken to hospital shortly after midnight. Officers who visited the facility established that she had allegedly been attacked by three masked men who reportedly poured petrol on her body before setting her ablaze.

Preliminary reports indicate the assailants allegedly demanded money or benefits they believed she had received due to her political support for President William Ruto. When she reportedly told them she had nothing, they allegedly attacked her before fleeing.

The incident sparked widespread outrage and condemnation, with speculation emerging that the attack may have been politically motivated. However, authorities say investigations are still ongoing to establish the motive.

News of Wandeto’s death was confirmed by fellow gospel artist Karangu Muraya, who paid tribute to her after she succumbed to her injuries.

“A great soul has rested… May your soul rest in peace, Rachel Wandeto,” Muraya said.

Wandeto had gone viral earlier in 2026 after tattooing President William Ruto’s image on her chest alongside the phrase “TUTAM” (Two Terms) and the President’s name on parts of her body in support of his 2027 re-election bid.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen had visited Wandeto at hospital a day before her death and condemned the attack, directing police to fast-track investigations.

“If it is true, as there have been speculations around the possibility of a political motive by basically attacking her for her political beliefs, this is really very dangerous for our country,” Murkomen said.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja also confirmed that investigations had commenced and directed the DCI to move swiftly to establish what transpired and bring those responsible to justice.

“The investigations have commenced. The DCI have been directed to move with speed to establish what happened so that all those involved must have their day before a court of law,” Kanja said.

Murkomen further cautioned political leaders against incitement and divisive rhetoric, warning that authorities would not tolerate politically instigated violence.

“I want to caution all political leaders to stop inciting Kenyans, radicalising youth, and hiring goons and gangs to attack other citizens. That behaviour is what leads to such acts,” he said.
