A 22-year-old man convicted of defiling a seven-year-old girl in Sondu Township, Soin-Sigowet Sub-County, was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Kericho Law Court.
The accused was found guilty of defilement after the prosecution proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.
The court heard that on December 19, 2024, at approximately 1200 hrs, the victim was washing dishes outside their rental house when the accused lured her into his house under the pretext of sending her to the shop. He then locked the door and, under threats of violence, defiled her.
The prosecution presented four witnesses, including the victim, alongside key evidence, including the blood-stained clothes the victim was wearing, medical examination reports, and forensic analysis, all confirming the assault.
The accused initially fled but was arrested a week later in Katitu after the victim positively identified him.
While delivering the sentence, Resident Magistrate Claire Odunga noted the violent nature of the offence and the mandatory life sentence prescribed under the law, emphasizing the gravity of the crime, the enduring harm inflicted upon the victim, and the necessity of a robust deterrent to prevent similar offences.
Elsewhere, a 55-year-old woman was sentenced to serve 50 years in jail for trafficking 3.9 kilos of heroin.
Busia court sentenced Mwaura Mumbi to serve 50 years imprisonment or pay a fine of Sh50 million after the prosecution proved a drug trafficking case against her.
Mumbi was found guilty of trafficking in narcotic drugs contrary to section 4(a)(ii) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act No.4 of 2022.
Mumbi was arrested on March 10, 2023, at Busia One Border Point, with 3.9 kilos of heroin with a street value of Sh11,808,000.
The prosecution successfully proved its case after presenting compelling testimonies from 10 prosecution witnesses and exhibits in court.
