Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Wednesday arrested a man accused of assaulting a woman, gouging out her eye.

28-year-old Victor Odhiambo Omanya, who has been on the run since 2018, was arrested in Kayole, Nairobi County.

According to the DCI, the victim, emotionally narrated the ordeal during the launch of a Social Justice Center in Kisauni, Mombasa County, last month.

“The matter was brought to the attention of the Director @DCI_Kenya Mr George Kinoti by the complainant(who spoke with a lot of emotion) while he joined other guests to launch a Social Justice Center in #Kisauni,” the DCI said in a tweet.

The suspect is in police custody, as investigations into the incident continue.

“The suspect remains in custody pending further inquiries,” DCI added.

The recently launched social justice centre, which was established through support from the UK Government in collaboration with Haki Afrika Organisation, aims at delivering justice to women who undergo social injustice crimes.

Speaking during the launch, DCI boss George Kinoti, noted that the centre will also help stem women radicalization and domestic violence cases in the area.

On his part, DPP Noordin Haji, vowed to protect women’s rights.

Haji noted that the county has in the past recorded rampant cases of drug and substance abuse, crime and rape cases among women. He assured the public that the centre was going to address such issues.
