Deputy President William Ruto has declared that he is ready to have a referendum if it will help to put Kenyans at ease with the constitution.
Speaking at a fundraiser in Tharaka Nithi on Saturday, the Deputy President declared that he supports the calls for a referendum but does not support the propaganda spread by the opposition that the referendum was part of the hand shake deal.
DP William Ruto said that people’s quest to change the constitution must be respected, so long as the opposition will not cry that the votes have been stole afterwards.
“…We are ready for referendum. Wale wa kupunguza mzigo na wale wa kuongeza wakubaliane ni nini wanataka…waseme tarehe, waseme watakubali matokeo… sisi tuko na kura,” he said.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has been at the fore front advocating for the referendum. This has been backed by the Thirdway Alliance party leader, Ekuru Aukot, who has been collecting 1 million signatures to petition for a referendum.
Different leaders including Gatundu South MP, Moses Kuria and West Mugirango MP Vincent Mogaka have supported the bill.
The referendum is meant to reduce the number of counties and the number of leaders in the country a bid to reduce the country’s wage bill.
DP Ruto was initially opposed to the calls for a referendum, saying that it was motivated by selfish interests of the opposition who wanted to create positions that will cater to them.
