A Dutch national who had been jailed for ten years for the offence of indecent act and nine other sexual offences before a children’s court died in hospital in Nairobi after an illness.
Police said Jan Int Veld Alias Teacher alias Dad alias Mzungu from Netherlands, 74 died at the Kenyatta National Hospital, where he had been admitted.
He was brought to the hospital from Industrial Area prison where he was serving sentence. He died on May 17, officials said. The cause of the death is yet to be disclosed and the body was moved to the Kenyatta Farewell Home awaiting autopsy.
He was in March 2025 convicted for exposing minors to pornographic videos and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
A Milimani magistrate’s court also ordered Jan In’t Veld alias Teacher, alias Mzungu, to pay a compensation of Sh1 million on each of the three victims.
Upon completion of his jail term, the convict was to be deported to the Netherlands, the court ordered. The sentence was pronounced by magistrate Joyce Macharia. The 74-year-old Dutch national was convicted with 10 counts ranging from child abuse to obscene videos.
He was arrested in December 2023 at JKIA as he attempted to flee the country. During the trial, digital forensic experts presented evidence of explicit WhatsApp conversations between the accused and a 17-year-old boy, where he encouraged the minor to engage in sexual activities.
The prosecution also presented graphic images and videos recovered from the convict’s phone, depicting child sexual abuse. While testifying in his defense, Jan denied wrongdoing, arguing that the Kenyan legal age for sexual consent was unreasonably high.
He further attempted to justify his actions using biblical references, a move that was heavily criticised by the prosecution.
The charge sheet showed that Jan intentionally, unlawfully, and indecently touched the genitals of male minors between April 2022 and June 2022 within Turbo Sub County in Uasin Gishu County.
He was also charged with child abuse, where the prosecution said he unlawfully received obscene images of minors aged 10 and seven for sexual gratification.
