The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested four members of the Gatundu North Constituency NG-CDF Committee over allegations of extorting Sh300,000 from a contractor in exchange for approving a pending payment of Sh9.1 million.

Those arrested are Annah Mugure Njoroge, Susan Wanjiru Muchiri, Stephen Waititu Mungai and James Kibe Ngige.

According to the Commission, it received a complaint that the officials had demanded a bribe to facilitate payment for completed works at Karure Primary School in Gatundu North.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the contractor had undertaken three projects at the school: construction of a modern kitchen, levelling and landscaping works, and renovation of an administration block and six classrooms.

The works were completed on January 31, 2026, after which the contractor formally applied for payment.

However, the four committee members allegedly blocked the payment, citing unspecified unresolved issues. On February 23, 2026, the complainant reportedly met three of the suspects, who allegedly demanded Sh300,000 to refrain from raising objections to the release of the funds.

EACC mounted an operation on February 25, 2026, leading to the arrest of the suspects at Karure Primary School as they allegedly received Sh250,000 from the contractor.

The suspects were escorted to the Integrity Centre in Nairobi for processing and later booked at Kilimani Police Station.

They were subsequently released on a cash bail of Sh40,000 each pending completion of investigations.

In a statement, the Commission reiterated its commitment to combating bribery at service delivery points, warning that individuals found engaging in corrupt practices would face the full force of the law.

The EACC further emphasized that tackling corruption in public projects remains key to safeguarding public resources and improving service delivery for citizens.
