The family of  the late Juliah Mwashi who was among the victims of the Ethiopian Airline crash are fighting for the compensation that the airline offered .

Her parents in Kakamega and her husband Henry Machariah are in tussle as to who should receive the compensation after her death.

The husband felt that the maternal side laying claim on the compensation was unfair as Mrs Mwashi was legally married to Henry at the time of her death. The two families held parallel memorial services in remembrance of Juliah. Machariah and Juliah were married for 22 years and sired three children .

“I am asking the government to be vigilant during the compensation process to ensure there is no confusion,” Macharia told The Star.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs last week asked all the victims’ families to acquire a Grant of Representation from court to receive compensation.

The legal document enables its bearer to administer the deceased’s property and will ensure only bona fide persons get the compensation, PS Macharia Kamau said.

The victims are set to receive between Sh 17 million and Sh 25 million in line with the Montreal convention of 1999 on Airline liability.

The plane #ET302 dropped from the radar six minutes after departure from Addis Ababa.

The plane is said to be four months old since it was delivered to the Airline.

According to a statement from the Airline, the accident happened around Bishoftu (Debre Zeit) at around 8.44 local time when it lost contact.

“Ethiopia Airlines regrets to confirm that its flight ET 302/10 March in schedule service from Addis Ababa to Nairobi was involved in an accident today around Bishoftu (Debre Zeit) . The aircraft B-737-800 Max with registration number ET-AVJ took off at 08.38am local time from Addis Ababa, Bole International Airport and lost contact at 08.44am,” read the statement in part.

149 passengers and 8 crew members were on board.
