A man accused of posing as a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Brigadier and swindling unsuspecting parents seeking military admission for their children was on Tuesday rearrested moments after attending a court mention in Nairobi.
Joshua Muthwii Maingi, who had previously been released on bond, had just stepped out of Milimani Law Courts when plain cloth officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) intercepted and arrested him again.
Maingi is facing multiple charges, including impersonation, obtaining Sh1.2 million by false pretenses, and possession of public stores.
According to the charge sheet, the accused allegedly presented himself as a KDF Brigadier on November 17, 2025, at Cherrywood Apartments in Kilimani, Nairobi, with the intent to defraud unsuspecting victims seeking military opportunities for their children.
In one of the counts, he is accused of jointly defrauding Robert Kipkurui Ng’etich of Sh510,000 on November 10 by claiming he could secure a KDF admission letter for Ng’etich’s daughter, Brenda Chepkorir, to join the Recruit Training School (RTS) at Moi Barracks in Eldoret.
In another count, prosecutors allege that on October 7, Maingi and others not before court obtained Sh700,000 from Kenneth Lomerical Kimaiwa, falsely claiming he would help Kimaiwa’s son, Kelvin Chilimo Rimaiwa, join RTS.
The accused was also found in possession of KDF public stores including a pair of Kenya Air Force combat attire, Brigadier rank slip-ons, garget patches, and a Brigadier rank badge items believed to have been stolen or unlawfully obtained.
Maingi had appeared before Chief Magistrate Dolphina Alego on November 25, where he denied all charges and was released on a Sh1 million bond, or an alternative cash bail of Sh500,000.
