Former Chepalungu MP and Cabinet Minister John Koech has passed away while receiving treatment at Nairobi Hospital.
President William Ruto led the country in mourning the late leader, praising him for his dedication to public service.
“Mheshimiwa John Koech was a hardworking leader who served the people of Chepalungu with dedication. He was focused, progressive, and development-conscious,” said President Ruto in a condolence message.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula also mourned Koech, describing him as a champion for quality education in the former Kericho and Bomet districts.
“I had the honour of serving alongside Hon. Koech during President Mwai Kibaki’s administration. He was a man of rare political clarity—principled, astute, and committed to Kenya’s progress,” said Wetang’ula, adding that the country had lost a great leader.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said Koech was the true definition of servant leadership and a mentor to many.
“He deeply cared about the economic wellbeing of his people and always encouraged them to start sustainable businesses. He was a Member of Parliament, diplomat, and minister, but he remained grounded and connected to ordinary Kenyans,” said Murkomen.
The CS added that Koech personally inspired him to join politics and described his passing as a huge loss.
“I am deeply saddened by his death. I send my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the people of Chepalungu, whom he served diligently,” Murkomen said.
