Four police officers were Wednesday arrested a suspect who was in custody escaped from the Isinya police cells, Kajiado County.

The suspect, identified as Brian Achieng, charged for the offence of stealing, escaped from the lawful custody before he could be placed in cells, police said.

Senior police officers who visited the scene said the suspect was brought to the station after he was caught with 16 kilos of hard plastic super fix glue valued at Sh8,000.

It was as he was being booked that he escaped, prompting a futile search for him.

The four officers who were on duty at the station were arrested pending a probe into the incident.

Elsewhere at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, a Chinese national who had been arrested over claims of tax evasion escaped from the local cells in unclear circumstances.

One Fan Guanze had been arrested by the anti-graft detectives for the offence of tax evasion and later handed to the local police for investigation and possible arraignment.

The incident happened on June 4 night after he had arrived from his country.

He however, managed to escape from the DCI general office while he was under interrogation.

Police searched for him from the airport to his usual operations area in Kilimani area in vain.

Police said security cameras showed he used a pink taxi to leave the airport. The officers who were handling him were interrogated as part of the probe into the issue.

The man had arrived aboard a China Southern Airline and left the airport before he was stopped by the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission officials.

This followed complaints that some passengers fail to pay taxes at the airport.

The bags he had contained cigarettes, food and electronic goods.

He was later handed to the multi-agency teams there for probe and processing.

Police said he escaped in unclear circumstances and efforts to arrest him are ongoing.

Teams are investigating claims of tax evasion at the airports.
