The Kenyan gospel music scene is in mourning following the passing of celebrated gospel singer Betty Bayo, who died while receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi.

    She was battling blood cancer.

Bayo, whose real name is Beatrice Wairimu Mbugua and who is known for her soulful voice and spiritually uplifting lyrics, was a prominent figure in Kenya’s gospel industry.

She gained widespread recognition for her ability to fuse African rhythms with contemporary gospel, creating music that resonated deeply with her audience.

Her notable works include the inspirational tracks “11th Hour”, “Ngai Ti Mundu”, “Busy Busy”, and her 2022 album “Uira”, which received critical acclaim for its heartfelt messages of faith and hope.

Fans, colleagues, and the broader gospel community have expressed deep sorrow over her passing, noting that her music provided comfort and spiritual encouragement to countless Kenyans.

“Her voice, her message, and her presence were a source of strength for many,” a fellow gospel artist said.

“Even as we mourn, her songs will continue to uplift and minister.”

Fellow musician Daddy Owen mourned the death.

“A true vessel of God whose voice & ministry touched countless lives. Her passion for the Gospel will never be forgotten. To her family, friends, & the entire Gospel fraternity, may God comfort & strengthen you,” he said in a post on X.

Betty Bayo leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations of gospel musicians and listeners in Kenya and beyond.

She is a former wife to pastor Kanyari. She had two children with him

In his official social media, Kanyari wrote, “R.I.P Mama Sky. The mother to my kids.”
