Becoming a diplomat is a prestigious and rewarding career for individuals who are interested in international relations, politics, and representing their country on a global stage. Diplomats are responsible for maintaining good relationships between their country and others, promoting national interests, and assisting citizens abroad. In South Africa, the path to becoming a diplomat involves academic qualifications, training, and a deep understanding of international affairs. Here is how to become a diplomat.

    1. Understand the Role of a Diplomat

Before pursuing this career, it is important to understand what a diplomat does. Diplomats represent their country in foreign nations through embassies and consulates. Their tasks include attending international meetings, negotiating treaties, assisting South African citizens abroad, and promoting trade and cultural exchanges. Diplomacy requires discretion, patience, and a strong sense of national pride.

    1. Obtain a Relevant Qualification

A good educational foundation is essential. To become a diplomat in South Africa, you typically need a bachelor’s degree in one of the following fields:

    • International Relations
    • Political Science
    • Law
    • Public Administration
    • Economics

These qualifications are offered by many South African universities. Postgraduate studies, such as an Honours or Master’s degree in international relations or diplomacy, can further improve your chances of being considered for diplomatic roles.

    1. Develop Key Skills and Attributes

Diplomats need a unique combination of skills, including:

    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
    • Knowledge of international law and global affairs
    • Negotiation and problem-solving abilities
    • Cultural sensitivity and emotional intelligence
    • Proficiency in multiple languages (an added advantage)

It also helps to stay informed on current international events and policies, as this knowledge is crucial for success in the field.

    1. Apply Through the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO)

In South Africa, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) is responsible for diplomatic affairs. Vacancies for entry-level diplomatic positions are advertised on the official DIRCO website or through public service job portals.

Applicants are usually required to submit a detailed CV, academic transcripts, and a motivational letter. If shortlisted, you may be called for assessments and interviews that evaluate your knowledge, reasoning, and communication abilities.

    1. Complete the Diplomatic Training Programme

Successful applicants may be enrolled in DIRCO’s diplomatic cadet programme. This is a structured training programme that equips future diplomats with knowledge of international law, protocol, diplomatic writing, and South African foreign policy.

This programme includes both classroom-based learning and practical training at embassies or consulates. Upon completion, cadets may be appointed to junior diplomatic roles such as Third Secretary or Attaché.

    1. Gain Experience and Climb the Ranks

With experience, diplomats can move up through various ranks, from junior positions to more senior ones such as First Secretary, Counsellor, and ultimately Ambassador. Advancement depends on performance, knowledge, and years of service.
