Knowing how to measure your bust correctly is essential for finding the right bra size, selecting well-fitting clothes, and ensuring comfort. A proper bust measurement helps avoid discomfort from tight or loose-fitting garments and enhances confidence in your appearance. Whether you’re shopping for a new bra, sewing a garment, or just curious about your size, measuring your bust is simple and can be done at home with a soft measuring tape. Here is how to measure bust.

    What You Need

To get an accurate measurement, you will need a flexible measuring tape, a mirror to check the tape’s position, and ideally, a well-fitted, non-padded bra. If you don’t have a measuring tape, you can use a piece of string and then measure it with a ruler.

Step 1: Measure the Band Size

The band size is the measurement around your ribcage, just below your bust. Stand straight and wrap the measuring tape snugly around your ribcage, making sure it sits level and parallel to the floor. Take a deep breath to ensure it’s not too tight, then note the measurement in inches. If the number is even, that is your band size. If it is odd, round up to the nearest even number.

Step 2: Measure the Bust Size

To find your bust size, wrap the measuring tape around the fullest part of your bust, usually at nipple level. Make sure the tape is not too tight and sits evenly around your back. Keep your arms relaxed and avoid pulling the tape too snugly, as this could give an inaccurate reading. Record the measurement in inches.

Step 3: Calculate the Cup Size

Once you have both the band and bust measurements, you can determine your cup size. Subtract the band measurement from the bust measurement:

    • A 1-inch difference indicates an A cup
    • A 2-inch difference indicates a B cup
    • A 3-inch difference indicates a C cup
    • A 4-inch difference indicates a D cup
    • A 5-inch difference indicates a DD cup, and so on

For example, if your bust measures 36 inches and your band size is 34 inches, the difference is 2 inches, meaning your cup size is B. Your bra size would then be 34B.

    Tips for Accurate Measurements

    • Stand naturally while measuring and avoid slouching or holding your breath
    • Wear a thin, non-padded bra for the best accuracy
    • Take measurements in front of a mirror to ensure the tape is level
    • If you’re between sizes, try both and see which feels more comfortable
