Eating sushi with chopsticks can feel tricky at first, but with the right technique, it becomes effortless. Chopsticks allow you to handle sushi delicately, preserving its shape and enhancing the dining experience. Whether you’re a beginner or just need a refresher, here’s how to use chopsticks for sushi.

    1. Holding Chopsticks Correctly
    • Hold one chopstick like a pencil, placing it between your thumb and index finger while resting it on your middle finger.
    • Place the second chopstick between your thumb and index finger, resting it against your ring finger.
    • Keep the bottom chopstick steady while using the top one to pick up food.
    1. Picking Up Sushi
    • Gently squeeze the chopsticks together to grab a piece of sushi.
    • Apply even pressure to avoid squeezing too hard and breaking the sushi apart.
    • If the sushi is too large, take smaller bites instead of forcing it all at once.
    1. Dipping Sushi in Soy Sauce
    • Turn nigiri (fish on rice) sideways and dip the fish side into soy sauce, not the rice. This prevents the rice from absorbing too much soy sauce and falling apart.
    • For maki rolls (seaweed-wrapped sushi), dip the edge lightly to avoid overwhelming the flavor.
    • Avoid drowning your sushi in soy sauce, as it can overpower the taste.
    1. Eating Sushi Properly
    • Lift the sushi carefully to your mouth and eat it in one bite, if possible.
    • If the piece is too large, take a small bite and hold the rest in your chopsticks until you’re ready for another bite.
    • If eating sashimi (raw fish slices without rice), simply pick up the piece and dip it lightly in soy sauce.
    1. Handling Difficult Sushi Pieces
    • If a piece of sushi is falling apart, try supporting it from below with your chopsticks.
    • Some sushi, like hand rolls (temaki), are traditionally eaten with hands instead of chopsticks.
    • If you’re struggling, it’s okay to switch to using your hands—many sushi chefs consider this acceptable.
    1. Sushi Etiquette with Chopsticks
    • Never stab your sushi with chopsticks—it’s considered rude.
    • Avoid rubbing chopsticks together, as it implies the restaurant has given you poor-quality utensils.
    • When not using them, rest your chopsticks on the holder instead of placing them on your plate or bowl.
