Inspector General (IG) of the National Police Service (NPS), Douglas Kanja Saturday May 3, 2025 joined other Inspectors General from seven Eastern African countries in a colourful closing ceremony for the East Africa Police Chiefs Cooperation Organisation (EAPCCO) at the Addis Ababa Sports Academy Indoor Complex Arena.

The one-week sporting competition included athletics, handball, darts, javelin, boxing, and shooting.

This year’s theme was: “Partnering for Peace and Security in Countering Transnational Organised Crime through Sports”.

Kenya was placed second overall with a total of 61 medals—16 gold, 25 silver, and 20 bronze—and was narrowly pipped to the post by the hosts, Ethiopia.

Kanja said he was elated with the performance by the NPS team and thanked all teams for representing the country well.

He reminded them to maintain discipline at all times in everything they do and to serve with integrity.

He noted that the event was not just a sporting competition but also an opportunity to strengthen ties between neighbouring countries in the fight against transnational organised crimes and other emerging security challenges, including terrorism and cybercrime.

IGP Felix Namuhoranye of Rwanda, who also serves as the current chairman of EAPCCO called for enhanced cooperation between East African countries and EAPCCO members in the fight against existing and emerging transnational crimes.

Later in the evening, Team Kenya was hosted by Kenya’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, George Morara Orina, at his residence for a medal presentation and celebration.

Orina thanked the team for a sterling performance and urged them to continue working even harder.
