KeNHA warns of road blockade on Mai Mahiu-Narok highway after flooding

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) Thursday issued an urgent advisory after flooding and silt deposition disrupted traffic along the Mai Mahiu–Suswa–Narok (B7) Road at Kedong Ranch near Suswa.

The incident happened on Thursday March 19 night. With more rains expected, there are fears the situation will worsen, officials warned.

This is the latest such incident on the key route amid efforts to address the menace.

According to KeNHA, the affected section had become unsafe due to heavy rainfall, with ongoing efforts to clear the road and restore normal traffic flow.

The agency told motorists to avoid attempting to drive through flooded sections to prevent accidents or getting stuck in silt, follow directions issued by police officers and traffic marshals on the ground and exercise extreme caution, especially between Naivasha Inland Container Depot and Suswa Ranch.

Motorists yet to begin their journeys were strongly advised to delay travel until floodwaters subside.

For those who must travel, KeNHA recommended the following alternative routes:

    • Ngong – Suswa

    • Nairobi – Naivasha – Nakuru – Mau Narok – Narok

    • Nairobi – Naivasha – Mount Longonot – Suswa

KeNHA Director General Eng. Luka Kimeli assured road users that teams are working around the clock to reopen the affected section and ensure safety.

Motorists are urged to remain vigilant as heavy rains continue to affect road conditions in the area.

The stretch has been persistently problematic for road users whenever it rains amid efforts to address the menace.

Most of the slit is swept downstream and dumped on the road which connects Nairobi and parts of South Nyanza and western Kenya.

The meteorological department has warned of heavy rains in several parts of the country and urged caution to avoid deaths or destruction of property.

More than 70 people have been killed in separate flooding incidents in the country in the past three weeks. Many others were injured and property were destroyed.
