The government has received nearly 11,000 doses of the Modified Vaccinia Ankara-Bavarian Nordic (MVA-BN) Mpox vaccine to help control the spread of the virus in the country.

In a press statement released on Thursday, April 10, 2025, Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale said the vaccines were secured through joint efforts by the Government of Kenya with support from Africa CDC, WHO, UNICEF, and GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance.

“The arrival of the vaccines marks a significant milestone in the national response to interrupt the chain of transmission and limit further spread of Mpox in the community,” said Duale.

The vaccines will be used alongside other public health measures as part of a broader Mpox outbreak response.

So far, 67 cases of Mpox have been confirmed across 13 counties since the disease was declared an outbreak on July 31, 2024.

The affected counties include Nairobi, Nakuru, Mombasa, Busia, Kajiado, Bungoma, Taita Taveta, Kericho, Makueni, Kilifi, Kiambu, Uasin Gishu, and Nyeri.

To stop the spread, the Ministry of Health has partnered with county governments and various stakeholders to deploy rapid response teams in high-risk areas.

These teams are carrying out active case searches, contact tracing, and treatment, as well as offering mental health and psychosocial support to affected individuals.

Public awareness campaigns are also ongoing to educate Kenyans on how to prevent and control the disease.
