The National Government through the Ministry of Environment has ordered the shutting down of three companies located along Mombasa road, Nairobi.

Issuing the order, Environment CS Keriako Tobiko noted that the firms, Powerex, Edible Oil and Usafiplus have been shut down over toxic gas emissions.

He further directed the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) to start investigations into the issue.

The order comes barely two weeks since the residents of South B and South C estates complained of a strong pungent small since March 5.

According to the residents, four children had been hospitalized following the release of toxic gas from the companies.

The residents of the estates located along Mombasa Road had lamented that the noxious gases, which were often emitted at night, were causing respiratory problems especially in children, who were now exhibiting symptoms such as nose bleeds, vomiting, and sore eyes.

Speaking on the issue, National Environmental Complaints Committee chairman Dr John Chumo stated that the organisation had reached out to the affected families.
