Kisii leaders press removal of Kisii Polytechnic Principal over nepotism claims

A section of Kisii politicians have called out on Education Cabinet Secretary Migos Ogamba to transfer Kisii Polytechnic Principal Tom Mulat citing nepotism.

They further accused the administrator of graft and mismanagement.

The accusations were, however, not independently verified by Kahawa Tungu as the principal was said to be out.

The call by the politicians on Wednesday was made at separate parallel press conferences in Kisii even as student leaders from the institution also met journalists and accused the principal of high handedness.

More others accused the college boss of graft.

There was no immediate comment from the principal.

Two former Ward Reps Samuel Apoko (Kiogoro) and Kefa Mogaka (Kisii Central) said arbitrary sackings of the locally sourced casual staff working at the college by the principal paints a bad legacy since he took helm.

Apoko described the ongoings at the institution as ‘ grave and unsettling’ thus warranting ‘investigations’ and higher political interventions.

He spoke of wrangles between the principal and other leaders saying they were derailing service delivery at the college.

“For the institution to move forward these issues must be addressed or he goes,” Apoko said adding that Mulat had been meddling in the community affairs.

Kefa Mogaka separately accused the principal of orchestrating nepotism in recruitment of staff.

“We are privy to ongoing staff reorganizations largely targeting people employed from the locality and being replaced by those from his community. This is absurd and must stop,” stated Mogaka.

Mogaka also accused the administrator of lethargy citing stalled key projects at the institution, some running into millions of shillings in cash.

“There is one particular project that has been going on well until Mulat arrived, nothing now appear to be functioning yet here is a person bragging that he is untouchable For the Polytechnic to rise, Mulat must go,” Mrefu told journalists.

The former Ward Rep listed some project costing Sh 50 million as among those stalling at the moment.

Ensaria Mache, also a politician, accused Mulat of running down the institution at the expense of progress and asked for his dismissal.

“We are planning massive protests to pressurize the CS Education to force him out or transfer him elsewhere,” Mache told journalists.

College students led by John Ochogo vowed to hold a demo to press the the government to remove him.

Among other grievances is non payment of dues to hire instructors.

He also said the principal has failed to facilitate student academic trips.
