A 42-year-old man drowned in a well in Bungoma County while attempting to retrieve a bucket that had reportedly been trapped inside for several days.

The incident occurred at Lumbokha Sub-location in Bumula Sub-county.

According to police, the deceased, identified as Edward Wanyama, visited the homestead on Wednesday with the intention of removing the bucket from the well.

Authorities said that after entering the well, Wanyama failed to resurface.

The matter remained undiscovered until later in the evening when a three-year-old child, a son of the homeowner, informed his father that the man had entered the well and had not come out.

The incident was reported to local authorities on Thursday, prompting a response from police officers and officials from the Bungoma County Government.

A joint retrieval operation was mounted, leading to the recovery of Wanyama’s body from the well. Police said the body had no visible injuries and was positively identified by family members.

The scene was documented and photographs taken as part of investigations.

The body was moved to the Bungoma County Referral Hospital mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.

Police have launched investigations into the incident.

Meanwhile, a 75-year-old man died after he was struck by a locomotive train in the Maji Mazuri area along the Eldoret–Nakuru railway line on Thursday afternoon.

According to police, the train driver reportedly sounded repeated warning hoots, but the pedestrian failed to move away from the railway track and was hit, sustaining fatal injuries.

Police officers from Maji Mazuri Police Station visited the scene and confirmed that the victim had died on the spot.

The deceased was later identified by relatives as Joseph Moinera, a 75-year-old resident of the area.

Preliminary investigations established that Moinera had a mental health condition, a fact that was confirmed by family members.

The body was moved to Eldama Ravine Sub-county Hospital Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Police have continued with investigations into the fatal railway accident.
