Mitchell Josef Santner is a New Zealand international cricketer known as a bowling all-rounder.

Born on 5 February 1992 in Hamilton, Waikato, he bats left-handed and bowls slow left-arm orthodox spin.

He plays all three formats for the Black Caps and represents Northern Districts in domestic cricket.

Educated at Hamilton Boys’ High School, he later studied mechanical engineering at Waikato University before cricket commitments took priority.

Santner rose to prominence after the retirement of Daniel Vettori, filling the left-arm spin role that New Zealand needed.

In December 2024 he was appointed permanent captain of New Zealand’s limited-overs sides, adding leadership responsibilities to his established playing role.

Beyond international duty he has featured in franchise leagues, including spells with Chennai Super Kings and later Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League, as well as other T20 competitions around the world.

    Siblings

Mitchell has two siblings. His younger brother is Elliot Harvey Santner, born in 1996.

Elliot is also a cricketer who has represented Northern Districts at under-age and domestic levels as a right-handed batsman and leg-break bowler.

He has played club cricket in the Waikato region and has worked as a cricket coach.

Santner’s sister is Olivia Santner. She has kept a lower public profile than her brother but is known for creative and wellness pursuits.

Olivia works as a graphic designer and yoga teacher and has run a pottery business; she has also explored launching a wedding studio.

    Career

Santner’s professional path began with Northern Districts, where a strong 2014–15 domestic season earned him national attention.

He made his One Day International debut on 9 June 2015 against England at Edgbaston after only a modest number of List A matches.

His Test debut followed later that year on 27 November 2015 against Australia in the first day-night Test in Adelaide.

He also debuted in T20 Internationals in June 2015.

Early promise with both bat and ball secured a regular place in New Zealand’s white-ball teams.

In Tests he contributed useful middle-order runs and economical spin; a highlight came in November 2019 when he scored his maiden century against England at Bay Oval, sharing a 261-run seventh-wicket partnership with BJ Watling that remains New Zealand’s highest for that wicket.

With the ball he has produced match-turning spells, including 7 for 53 in a Test against India in 2024 that helped New Zealand complete a historic series whitewash on Indian soil.

In limited-overs cricket he has been a consistent performer across World Cups and bilateral series, often strangling middle orders with accurate left-arm spin.

Franchise success followed, with Chennai Super Kings selecting him for several Indian Premier League seasons before a move to Mumbai Indians.

Domestically he has helped Northern Districts claim Super Smash titles.

By 2024–25 he had assumed captaincy of New Zealand’s ODI and T20I sides, guiding the team through tri-series and major tournaments while continuing to contribute with bat and ball.

    Accolades

In the 2016 T20 World Cup Santner produced figures of 4 for 11 against India, the best bowling by a New Zealand spinner in the tournament’s history, and was named Man of the Match.

He was subsequently selected in Team of the Tournament lists by the ICC, ESPNcricinfo and Cricbuzz. He has collected multiple Man of the Match awards across formats and competitions.

In the 2023 ODI World Cup he became the first New Zealand spinner to take a five-wicket haul at an ICC event.

His record seventh-wicket partnership in Tests and match-winning performances, including a ten-wicket haul in a single Test against India, stand as notable milestones.

New Zealand Cricket Almanack named him Player of the Year in 2025.

He has been part of New Zealand sides that reached the final of the 2019 Cricket World Cup, the 2021 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy, finishing as runners-up on each occasion.
