Thomas William Maxwell Latham, commonly known as Tom Latham, is a New Zealand international cricketer born on 2 April 1992 in Christchurch, Canterbury.

He is a left-handed batsman and occasional wicket-keeper who has represented the Black Caps across all formats since his international debut in 2012.

He stands as one of New Zealand’s most consistent performers, particularly in Test cricket, where he ranks among the country’s highest run-scorers and holds the record for the most runs by a New Zealand opener.

Latham has served as Test captain since 2024 and has previously captained the side in ODIs and T20Is on multiple occasions.

He is the son of former New Zealand international Rod Latham, who played four Tests and 33 ODIs in the early 1990s, and his mother is Sally Latham.

He attended Cobham Intermediate School and Christchurch Boys’ High School, where he balanced cricket with rugby before committing fully to the former.

Latham married Nicole McAuley in September 2019, and the couple have a son, Angus Jack Latham, born in July 2021.

    Siblings

Tom has one sibling, an older brother named Matt Latham, who is approximately 18 months his senior.

Matt is a former New Zealand indoor cricket international.

Growing up, the brothers often practised together in the backyard and played in the same junior teams, starting with Kiwi Cricket.

Their shared early experiences on the family lawn and in age-group sides helped shape Tom’s introduction to the game, with Matt’s involvement encouraging him to take up the sport seriously.

    Career

Latham began his domestic career with Canterbury in the 2010–11 Plunket Shield season, scoring 65 on first-class debut.

He represented New Zealand at the Under-19 level, including the 2010 ICC Under-19 World Cup, and progressed through age-group and A-team pathways.

He made his ODI debut on 3 February 2012 against Zimbabwe. His T20I debut came on 30 June 2012 against the West Indies.

He made his Test debut on 14 February 2014 against India.

Initially versatile in batting position and capable of keeping wicket, he established himself as a regular Test opener.

He has also played county cricket in England for Kent in 2016, Durham from 2017 to 2018, Surrey in 2023 and Warwickshire in 2025, as well as a stint with Scotland in limited-overs cricket.

Over his international career he has accumulated more than 6,400 Test runs at an average around 39, with a highest score of 264 not out, alongside substantial contributions in ODIs and more selective appearances in T20Is.

Leadership opportunities came early at provincial level and later at international level, culminating in his appointment as permanent Test captain in 2024.

    Accolades

Latham was a member of the New Zealand side that won the 2019–2021 ICC World Test Championship.

He featured in the teams that finished runners-up at the 2015 and 2019 Cricket World Cups and the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

As Test captain he led New Zealand to a historic 3–0 series victory in India in 2024, the first time an away side achieved a whitewash there.

He holds the record for the most Test centuries by a New Zealand opener, with 17 as of 2026, and is among the highest overall Test run-scorers for the country.

His 264 not out against Sri Lanka in Wellington in December 2018 remains a standout individual performance, achieved while carrying his bat.

He has also recorded multiple ODI centuries, including a highest of 145 not out.
