Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen Thursday pledged increased police deployments to Borabu, Nyamira County to combat the rising incidents of cattle theft that have plagued the region in recent months.

The CS acknowledged the residents’ concerns and emphasized the government’s commitment to providing security.

“We are aware of the challenges residents here have faced, especially due to rampant cattle rustling,” he stated.

He said he will ask the Inspector General of Police to send more Anti-Stock Theft Unit to forestall further cross border raids.

“Even as we wait for additional recruitment, I am going to instruct the IG to expedite the deployment of additional staff to help in the meantime,” the CS stated.

Murkomen was speaking in Kisumu during an engagement with journalists from Nyanza region.

Recruitment and subsequent deployments, the CS said, would help the government beef up enough security personnel to troubled areas around the country.

He said the government would also work closely with local leaders and security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering and ensure swift response to criminal activity.

Last week Borabu MP Patrick Osero accused the Interior CS of lethargy amid rising wave of insecurity in the constituency .

He said what was began as isolated incident of cattle left , have since increased leaving several families traumatized and suffering economic losses.

“We are witnessing an alarming trend of cattle thefts, especially in border villages like Esise and Laitigo. These acts are criminal and must be dealt with firmly,” stated Osero during a meeting with journalists at his home.

Villagers in the area have been reporting heavily armed raiders suspected to be from neighboring Bomet County staging nighttime attacks, stealing livestock and fleeing into the hilly terrain, making a mock of the Anti Stock police units deployed there.

On Thursday, Murkomen urged security agencies to intensify patrols and surveillance in affected areas and called for inter-county cooperation to curb the vice.

“We need both county and national governments to work together and bring these criminals to justice. Our people must feel safe in their homes,” he added.

Murkomen, however, clarified that the issue of cattle rustling is a widespread problem affecting various parts of the country.

He emphasized the need for a coordinated, nationwide approach to addressing the menace, which he said threatens both security and economic development in rural areas.

“Cattle rustling is not domiciled in Borabu. It is a national challenge that affects several regions including parts of the Rift Valley, North Eastern, and even the Coastal region,” Murkomen said.

Borabu has experienced a spike in livestock-related crimes in recent months, sparking fears among residents and prompting calls for urgent government intervention.
